Transformation is a decision problem before it is a technology problem.

I am Mahmoud Allam. I lead enterprise technology and build the companies and systems that carry it — in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, across real estate, construction, healthcare, manufacturing and retail, since 2008.

Technology executive and transformation builder.

What I do

Two ways of working, kept separate on purpose

Most of my career has been spent inside organisations, holding the mandate rather than advising on it — owning the roadmap, the budget, the governance and the consequences. That is different work from advising, and it produces different judgement. I keep the two distinct here because conflating them is how buyers end up disappointed.

Executive leadership is a mandate held inside an organisation: accountability for the technology estate and for the transformation programme that changes it. Advisory is bounded work delivered from outside, for owners, boards and executive teams who need judgement rather than headcount.

Where the judgement comes from

Enterprise systems, governance, and the distance between them

The recurring failure I have watched is not technical. Organisations buy a system to solve a problem they have not defined, then discover that the software has quietly made decisions the business should have made itself — about how work is sequenced, who approves what, and what counts as finished.

ERP is the clearest case. An implementation is not a software project; it is a negotiation about how a company will operate, conducted in a language most of the negotiating parties do not speak. My job, more often than not, has been to translate — and to slow the decision down long enough for it to be made properly.

Building

Ten companies, one argument about where a business should be cut

Each was built because a capability was being done badly as somebody’s second priority — advisory kept apart from delivery, infrastructure apart from applications, capability treated as a deliverable rather than a line item. The ecosystem is that argument made ten times, and integrated where a client’s problem does not respect the boundaries.

The record

Recognised as one of the Top 25 IT Consultants of the Year at the 2nd Information Technology Confex in Dubai, October 2024, where I also spoke. In the same season I spoke at Construct Talks in Jeddah on digital transformation in construction.

Certified PMP, ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer, ISO 9001:2015 Lead Auditor, Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and BCS Foundation in Business Analysis. The credentials matter less than what they signal: the work has been done inside governed environments where evidence is expected.

Two transformations are written up in full under work — anonymised, and described closely enough to be useful.

Thinking

Four manuscripts, written alongside the work

I write in Arabic, about the things the profession rarely puts in writing: how decisions are weighed, what uprightness costs in a market, how a single surah reads as one argument about building a life, and where a company’s numbers stop describing it honestly. That, and professional works on choosing, delivering and operating enterprise systems. In all, none of them published, and none described here as though it were.

Access

If you are considering a mandate, an engagement, or a conversation

The clearest way to start is to say which of those it is. The contact page is organised around that question rather than around a form.
